BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WARNING IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED 05:30 MST Thu Jan 08 2026 The Gallatin NF Avalanche Center in Bozeman has issued a BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WARNING for the following areas: NWS Great Falls MT - MTZ330 (MTZ330)
What: Very dangerous avalanche conditions exist. The avalanche danger is HIGH
Where: The Lionhead area near West Yellowstone.
When: In effect from Thursday 05:30 AM MST to Friday 05:30 AM MST.
Impacts: Heavy snowfall over the last 5 days combined with strong winds has overloaded many slopes. You can easily trigger bone breaking avalanches that may bury you 6 feet deep.
Precautionary / Preparedness Actions: Avoid being on or underneath any slope steeper than 30 degrees. Stay far away from these slopes. Consult http://www.mtavalanche.com or www.avalanche.org for more detailed information. Similar avalanche danger may exist at locations outside the coverage area of this or any avalanche center.
