A Flood Warning means water levels above flood stage are imminent or may already be occurring. Persons along rivers and streams in the warned area should take immediate precautions to protect life and property. These forecasts are based on observed precipitation as well as forecast precipitation 24 hours into the future. Changes to the rainfall forecast, or any additional rainfall after 24 hours, may cause changes to these river forecasts. Additional information is available at www.weather.gov. The next statement will be issued by Saturday evening.

Description

What: Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
Where: Portions of northern and central Illinois and northwest Indiana.
When: Until 10 AM CDT /11 AM EDT/ Saturday.
Impacts: Roads and streets may be flooded. Area creeks and streams are already elevated, increasing the risk of flooding due to additional rainfall.
Additional Details: - Recent rounds of heavy rainfall have left soils saturated and stream and creek levels elevated across the area. Additional rounds of heavy rainfall overnight may lead to rapid run-off and an increased threat of flash flooding. - http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

A Flood Watch for flash flooding means rapid-onset flooding is possible, but not yet certain, based upon the latest forecasts. Flash flooding is a dangerous situation. Persons with interests along area rivers, creeks, and other waterways should monitor the latest forecasts and be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

Description

What: Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.
Where: Portions of Cook County, Illinois and Lake County, Indiana.
When: Until 200 AM CDT.
Impacts: Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.
Additional Details: - At 1122 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Up to 1 inch of rain has fallen. - Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected over the area. This additional rain will result in localized flooding. - Some locations that will experience flooding include Chicago, Hammond, Gary, Orland Park, Tinley Park, Oak Lawn, Calumet City, Portage, Merrillville, Chicago Heights, Roseland, South Shore, Englewood, Chicago Lawn, Bridgeport, Midway Airport, South Lawndale, Chicago Loop, East Chicago and Schererville. - http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

A Flood Advisory means minor flooding along waterways and other poor drainage areas is imminent or may already be occurring. Persons in the advisory area should use caution and avoid flood waters. Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.
