« L'incroyable chute de neige de 51 cm qu'a enregistrée l'aéroport d'Ottawa est la plus importante en terme de quantité reçue en une journée », a expliqué Environnement Canada dans un bilan météorologique de la tempête majeure survenue mardi. Le record de neige reçue en une journée remontait au 2 mars 1947 et était de 40,6 cm. L'autre record battu est celui du nombre de centimètres de neige tombés en un épisode de tempête. Celui-ci remontait aux 16 et 17 février 1954, où la tempête avait laissé 48 cm.
Ce mardi, il est tombé jusqu'à plus de 5 cm par heure, forçant la fermeture de commerces et de lieux publics, bloquant les automobilistes, et en somme, paralysant la ville.
En moyenne, Ottawa reçoit habituellement 43 cm pour la totalité du mois de février !
